Barfield news

Welcome to the news page - here you can find out a bit about what we're up to and where you can hear us soon.

What we've done

Caterham

6 January We started our forty-second year as a team by joining the SE Region at their New Year Rally held at Stafford School, Caterham. We arrived in pouring rain and squeezed into a packed hall for a happy day of massed ringing, which included American Patrol and Daniel's Waltz - the latter written for Daniel Pelling by his partner, Adrienne. It has become a tradition for each team to take a birthday cake or sweet to share during the afternoon tea break, and this year's delicious selection did not disappoint!

Redhill

3 March Some of the team attended the SE Region AGM and rally at Redhill. Unfortunately Bill Butler, our musical director and conductor, was unable to get back from the USA in time when his flight home was delayed by a tornado!

Ruby Ring, Hatfield

13 - 15 April Most of the team attended "Ruby Ring", the national rally at Hatfield University which marked the 40th anniversary of the founding of HRGB, where we were invited to perform as the final act of the Grand Concert. Over the course of the weekend, there were over 30 workshops covering a wide range of subjects: there was certainly something for everyone - even cow and sheep bells upon which one group managed to play (amidst much hilarity) a recognisable tune!

Hampstead Norreys

7 July We held a joint rally with Hampstead Norreys Ringers at their village hall, and invited sixteen teams from our immediate area to join us. The visitors were all well pleased, and have commented that they are all looking forward to the 2008 rally.

Thatcham Arts Festival

October Our open evening on the 8th was again popular, and we were able to give some members of the public an opportunity to try out our bells. On the 14th we took part in the final concert of the week at St Mary's Church.

Guildford

10 November Once again we took part in the annual festival service at Guildford Cathedral, alongside ringers from across the SE Region. This year's service was based on words taken from the General Thanksgiving - thanks, mercy, goodness, kindness, praise, holiness, righteousness and blessings - and seemed to be much enjoyed by both ringers and congregation.

Basingstoke, Caversham, Leckhampstead

December Our Christmas activities this year included: two gala evenings at Milestones Museum in Basingstoke (for the fifth successive year); the annual Christmas party of Caversham Allotment Holders & Gardens Association; and Leckhampstead Women's Institute Christmas party.

What we'll be doing

Concert at Thatcham

15 March We're putting on a concert for ourselves and St. Mary's Church, Thatcham. We'll be playing several pieces as a team, and Graham Hedges will be ringing two solo pieces by way of contrast. There are also poems on bells and ringing, read by some of the team. Tickets cost £5 (£3.50 concession) and can be ordered by emailing Dianne Rogers, our Secretary (click the link to send an email).
